📘 Project Management

Approaches

Predictive • Adaptive (Agile) • Hybrid

In PMP terminology, Project Management Approaches are the methods or ways used to plan, execute, monitor, and deliver a project.

The PMBOK® Guide recognizes several approaches, with the three main categories being: Predictive, Adaptive (Agile), and Hybrid.

📘 Project Management Approaches

🔷 Predictive Approach (Waterfall)

The project scope, schedule, and cost are defined early, and work proceeds through planned phases.

Characteristics
  • Detailed planning upfront
  • Requirements are stable and well understood
  • Changes are controlled through formal processes
  • Sequential execution
Best For
  • Construction projects
  • Manufacturing
  • Infrastructure projects
  • Projects with fixed requirements
Example

Building a bridge where requirements are known before construction begins.

🔶 Adaptive Approach (Agile)

Requirements and solutions evolve through collaboration and frequent feedback.

Characteristics
  • Flexible and iterative
  • Embraces change
  • Frequent customer involvement
  • Delivers value in small increments
Best For
  • Software development
  • Product innovation
  • Projects with changing requirements
Example

Developing a mobile app where features are refined based on user feedback.

🟩 Hybrid Approach

Combines elements of both Predictive and Adaptive approaches.

Characteristics
  • Some parts are planned in detail
  • Other parts are developed iteratively
  • Balances control and flexibility
Best For
  • Large organizations
  • Complex projects with mixed requirements
Example

A banking project where regulatory requirements are planned predictively, but the customer-facing app is developed using Agile.

📊 Comparison

Predictive Adaptive (Agile) Hybrid
Plan-driven Change-driven Combination
Stable requirements Evolving requirements Mixed requirements
Detailed upfront planning Continuous planning Partial upfront planning
Low flexibility High flexibility Moderate flexibility
Sequential delivery Incremental delivery Mixed delivery

🎯 PMP Exam Tip

When to use Predictive
  • Requirements are clear
  • Changes are minimal
  • Scope is fixed
When to use Agile
  • Requirements are uncertain
  • Frequent feedback is needed
  • Rapid value delivery is important
When to use Hybrid
  • Some requirements are fixed and some are evolving
  • Organization needs both governance and flexibility

📌 Simple Definitions

Predictive

Plan everything first, then execute.
Adaptive (Agile)

Learn and adapt as the project progresses.
Hybrid

Combine predictive and adaptive methods where appropriate.

🧠 Easy Memory Trick

🔷 Predictive = Predict and Plan
🔶 Agile = Adapt and Deliver
🟩 Hybrid = Mix and Match
