📘 Phases & Deliverables in PMP

Understanding Project Life Cycle and Deliverables

What is a Project Phase?

A project phase is a logical grouping of related project activities that leads to one or more major deliverables.

A project is often divided into phases to make it easier to manage, control, and monitor.

Typical Project Phases

1. Initiation

• Define project at high level
• Identify stakeholders
• Create project charter

2. Planning

• Define scope, schedule, cost
• Develop project management plan
• Plan risk, quality, resources

3. Execution

• Perform actual work
• Build product/service/result
• Manage team and resources

4. Monitoring & Controlling

• Track performance
• Control scope, schedule, cost
• Manage risks and changes

5. Closing

• Final delivery
• Formal acceptance
• Release resources
• Lessons learned

📦 Deliverables in PMP

A deliverable is any unique and verifiable product, result, or service produced to complete a process, phase, or project.

Types of Deliverables

1. Final Deliverable
Completed project output
Example: Mobile banking app
2. Intermediate Deliverables
Produced during project
Example: Design document, prototype, test report
3. Phase Deliverables
Outputs of each phase
Example: Project Charter, Project Plan

Relationship: Phases vs Deliverables

Phases Deliverables
Groups of activities Outputs of work
Structure of project What is produced
Planning phase Project schedule, cost plan

Each phase produces deliverables, and deliverables help move the project forward.

🧠 Example: Website Project

Phase Deliverables
Initiation Project charter
Planning Requirements document, design plan
Execution Website developed
Testing Test reports, bug fixes
Closing Final website delivery

🎯 PMP Exam Tip

• Phase = “When/How work is organized”
• Deliverable = “What is produced”
• Every phase must produce something measurable
