⚙️ Operations Management

Ongoing Business Activities That Ensure Continuous Organizational Functioning

What is Operations Management?

In PMP terminology, Operations Management refers to the ongoing management of business activities that produce repetitive outputs and maintain the organization’s day-to-day functioning.

Operations Management is the administration of business practices to create the highest level of efficiency within an organization, ensuring continuous production of goods or services.

Key Characteristics of Operations

• Ongoing and continuous (not temporary like projects)
• Produces repetitive outputs
• Focused on efficiency and stability
• Supports the business after projects are completed
• Runs day-to-day business functions

Examples of Operations

  • Running a bank’s daily transaction processing
  • Managing customer support call center
  • Operating manufacturing assembly lines
  • Maintaining IT systems and servers
  • Processing payroll every month

Operations vs Projects

Projects Operations
Temporary Continuous
Unique output Repetitive output
Ends when objectives are met Ongoing indefinitely
Build a website Maintain the website

Operations vs Project Management (PMP View)

  • Project Management → Creates change (new product, service, result)
  • Operations Management → Maintains business as usual

Projects often transition into operations once the deliverable is complete.

Example:

  • Project: Build a mobile banking app
  • Operations: Maintain, update, and support the app after launch
